Greece

After surveying many different architectural landmarks during the Europe program, the final destination and site of the proposed project was in Patra, Greece. The summer design studio was located in Patra not far from the site, which was located in an old historic rail yard. Greek vernacular has been a topic of the architectural field since its inception. The Greek “polikatoikia” or multi-house is the staple of current construction in Greece. The multi-house roughly resembles Le Corbusier’s Domino House, a rough frame in which the surrounding vernacular is applied.

The Patra project is designed around the concepts of the Domino House, an extremely efficient structural design that can be reused and repurposed in many ways. The design opens up to ground floor arcades, along with open commercial and residential spaces on the higher levels. The residential units can be merged with other units in a multitude of ways in order to accommodate the growing needs of residents.
